This site is dedicated
to the late Don McMartin, 1954-2000. He was fascinated by
all sorts of "creepy-crawlies," especially reptiles and
amphibians, his entire life. This picture of Uncle Don with
a snapping turtle was taken in the summer of 1992. PLEASE
NOTE: While past authors and outdoorsmen used to
advocate handling snapping turtles by the tail (to avoid getting
bitten), it is now considered an unacceptable practice by most, as
it can seriously injure the turtle.
There is a LOT of material on this site, primarily in the
"Field Herping" section.
***UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2006: I
am seeking all information pertaining to reptile-related
"sting" operations, including Operations Rockcut and
Slither. My goal is to assemble a timeline of the various
actions against herpers, primarily those who were accused but
later acquitted. Illegal activities involving herps should
(and will) be condemned, but I want to highlight unnecessary
harassment of law-abiding herpers.***
