- Family: Agamidae (agamid lizards)
- Genus: Physignathus (water dragons)
|
|
Scientific Name: Physignathus
lesueurii (Gray, 1831) |
Habitat: Semi-aquatic;
wooded areas near water. |
Physio="nature," gnathus="jaw"
|
Length: About 20 inches
total. |
|
Food: Insects and
aquatic organisms, as well as some plant matter. |
|
These lizards were found roaming the grounds of
Australia Zoo (they weren't "officially" part of the
exhibits). The first picture is of an adult basking on a
rock. |
|
The second picture is a juvenile
on the sidewalk. I saw a couple of adult water dragons
chasing each other around in one of the crocodile enclosures prior
to a demonstration. They cleared the area when the
demonstration started and the saltie heaved himself out of the
water! |
