In 2000 I visited Death Valley National Park. I was concerned the weather wasn't yet warm enough to see any reptiles, but fortunately it was. In the Salt Creek area I found zebra-tailed lizards, and at Jubilee Pass I found a whiptail

Habitats a little more hospitable include large groves of Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) like the one here.

In early October 2002 I visited Anza-Borrego State Park, east of San Diego.  October's a little late in the year to find them out and about, but I found both whiptails and one of my favorite reptiles, a collared lizard.

In April 2003 I visited Anza-Borrego once again and found a lot more of what I was looking for!  All the animals are listed below.

In January 2004 I again visited SoCal and was fortunate to meet up with a couple of friends I correspond with via FieldHerpers.com.  Surprisingly (to me, anyway), we found several species of reptile active even with temps only climbing to the low 70s mid-afternoon (and with downright chilly nights!).  They're listed below as well.
