Granite Spiny Lizard

Order:  Squamata (scaled reptiles)
Suborder:  Lacertilia (=Sauria) (lizards)
Family:  Iguanidae (iguanid lizards)
Subfamily:  Phrynosomatinae (spiny and horned lizards)
Genus:  Sceloporus (fence and spiny lizards)

Scientific Name:  Sceloporus orcutti Stejneger, 1893

Habitat:  Rocky areas, canyons with large boulders.

Skelos="leg," porus="pore" (referring to femoral pores on the legs), orcutti in honor of naturalist Charles R. Orcutt

Length: to 10.5 inches total.

I happened to see this juvenile lizard sunning itself, looking very proud, as I was hiking the Palm Canyon Trail at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park the morning of 11 April 2003.

This specimen was only about 6 inches long.  I saw a few adults which were easily twice as big, but they always ran off before I got close enough for a photograph. Granite Spiny Lizard
