Green Iguana

Order:  Squamata (scaled reptiles)
Suborder:  Lacertilia (=Sauria) (lizards)
Family:  Iguanidae (iguanid lizards)
Subfamily:  Iguaninae (iguana-like lizards)
Genus:  Iguana (iguanas)
Also Known As:  common iguana, "pollo de palo" (tree chicken)

Scientific Name:  Iguana iguana

Habitat:  Rain forest canopy, often near water.

Iguana=Arakawan (Spanish) word

Length: Over 6 feet.
Food:  Leaves, flowers, and other plant matter.

Range:  Much of Central and South America and the Caribbean.

The first picture is a still from my video camera, taken with the Night Shot feature on.  It was close to midnight and we discovered a baby iguana sleeping in the leaves.  The iguana appears dark due to the different light-reflecting properties of its skin in comparison to the plant (and my thumb).

The next shot is after I picked up the iguana and brought him under a light for a better picture.  We released him in the same bush in which he was found. Baby Iguana
The final picture is of a large male iguana who was hanging out by the pool with the other hotel guests.  Iguanas are a popular pet; however, many people buy them for the "cool" factor without realizing they require specialized care.  They can make good pets if you can handle (and afford!) the responsibility.   BIG Iguana
