In June 2001 I traveled through
Puerto Rico on my way home from South
Africa. While there I stayed at the Westin
Rio Mar Beach Hotel and Resort. On the hotel grounds iguanas
roam free. The hotel staff stages daily feedings of the
iguanas, and I have great video of the lizards rushing in from all
directions, swimming across watercourses if necessary (like in the
picture here--you can see the head above the surface and the hind
legs and tail underwater).
In addition to the iguanas, I observed several ameivas
at the Westin. In July, I returned to Puerto Rico while on a
cruise, and observed ameivas on the grounds of El Morro, part of San
Juan National Historic Site.
