Three-toed Box Turtle

Family:  Emydidae (aquatic and subaquatic turtles)

Genus:  Terrapene (box turtles)

 

Also known as:  Eastern Box Turtle (general name for all subspecies of T. carolina) Scientific Name:  Terrapene carolina triunguis Agassiz, 1857
Habitat:  Wooded to semi-open areas of the eastern states.

 

Length: This individual's carapace measures 5.4 inches long. Terrapene=from Native American word for turtle, carolina="ornate," triunguis"="three toes"
Food:  A variety of items--box turtles are omnivorous.  In captivity, this individual has eaten:  apples, bananas, corn, carrots, collard greens, cantaloupe, green beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, pinkie mice, crickets, nightcrawlers, spinach, watermelon, May beetles (June bugs), cicadas, grasshoppers, minnows and goldfish.

Eastern Box Turtle Range

I've had Lionel since 1984, when I picked "him" up near Joplin, Missouri.  I put "him" in quotes, because Lionel is actually a female.  Of course, I didn't know this at the time I named "him"--I was only 10 years old!
