Guam has a real problem with brown tree snakes.
These non-native snakes were introduced around 50 years ago, most
likely stowing away on cargo ships and planes. They have had a
detrimental effect on the native wildlife, especially the birds,
many of which are not found anywhere else. These snakes pose a
threat to native species wherever they establish a reproducing
population. Hawai'i is very attentive to all inbound ships and
aircraft, inspecting for stowaway snakes, since the introduction of
brown tree snakes to Hawai'i would wipe out their native birds as
well. |
